June Cuthbertson

Women at the Helm June Cup series – PRYC assumed the hosting of this summer twilight series from RBYC in 2023. This memorial regatta honors past RBYC Commodore, June Cuthbertson, who was a Columbia Challenger racer, mentor, Director, and race chair. June got involved in the sailing community several years after relocating to California. She was part of the old Palos Verdes Yacht Club which was more of a paper club providing access to regattas. In 1981, the Club changed its name to RBYC and a few years after that, it settled in a permanent location in King Harbor where it remained until the club disbanded.

June also championed to get women involved in sailing. As such, a woman skipper must alone hold the helm on most legs of the course, during the start and finish, all tacks, gybes, mark roundings, and represent the boat in any protest. Change in 2024 – the same woman does not need to skipper the boat for all 4 races for the boat to qualify for the perpetual trophy; however, the boat must delegate a single team lead female skipper at registration to represent the team and to have her name on the perpetual trophy. We feel that this change is more within the spirit of the event which is designed to get more women on the water!

2023 Awards: PHRF A – “Scooter” – Liz Hjorth; PHRF B – “Sunday Flyer” – Ruby Wright; Non-Spin – “Oliver” – Dorian Harris

PRYC will host weekly award ceremonies following each race, along with the presentation of the perpetual trophies in the late fall. Come and join us for the fun!
